Château Margaux
Margaux, Médoc, Left Bank, Bordeaux, France
A remarkable wine of finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Operating under the Chateau Margaux since the 16thCentury, Chateau Margaux found its place originally selling claret to the Dutch and English market. Chateau Margaux survived a number of turbulent historical events and passed through the hands of many owners. In 1705 and the London Gazette advertised the first auction of great Bordeaux growths: 230 barrels of “Margose”! The 1771 vintage was the first “claret” to appear in a Christie’s catalogue. After quite a few bad years during the French revolution, where theMargaux properties were confiscated, eventually the surviving family members bought it back. In 1815 a new era started with the Chateau that we are familiar with today, with the building of the “Versailles of the Médoc” In 1855 Chateau Margaux received its premier grand cru classé growth status.
By the 1970s Chateau Margaux had moved into the hands of the Mentzelopoulos family, investing deeply in the Château
