Domaine Frederic Esmonin
Gevrey-Chambertin, Cotes-de-Nuits, Bourgogne, France
“Together, Andre and Fredric have propelled their domaine into the upper echelons of Gevrey quality.” Remington Mornan MW The Great Domaines of Burgundy.
This small domaine is a quiet achiever without the fanfare associated with the big names of Burgundy. Located in Les Estournelles, Gevrey-Chambertin, their total vineyard holdings amount to just four hectares. At least 11 crus are vinified so production of some are very small. The vines are very old, and it is said that some of the great Leroy wines of the 1950s were made from grapes grown at this domaine.
Frederic Esmonin is a son of Andre who prior to 1987 sold all the domaine's wines to the likes of Jadot and Leroy. Andre was a highly respected grower who was also known for cultivating vines in Mazis-Chambertin for the Hospices de Beaune.
The wines have been domaine bottled only since 1991. In recent times they have been highly praised for both their consistency and quality. The wines are generally found to be aromatic and elegant with silky power and an underlying structure for lengthy ageing.
