Peter Maude Fine Wines
2025, Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild, PAUILLAC
The second wine of Mouton Rothschild. First produced in 1993. It comes from younger vines of the main Mouton vineyard.
2025 it is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot (nearly all of Mouton's Merlot crop), 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Ageing in 50% new oak.
Open and juicy with a plush nature as well as a noticeable ripeness, yet it's only 13% alcohol. Medium to full-bodied with fine, velvety tannins and a savoury, flavorful finish. Juicy and layered. Structured. Plenty of blackberry and blueberry character.
95-96 James Suckling.
The aromatics are very signature Petit Mouton - gentle toasted sandalwood and cedar, mint leaf, incense, but the impression on the palate is of fresher fruit, blueberry pie, crayon and slate. Will deepen further over ageing, but full of promise already, juicy with salted cracker and oyster shell, and I am reminded of the 2023. 50% new oak. 2035-2055. 94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux.
Lovely fragrance, raspberry flowers. Creamy, aromatic, expressive. Supple and fleshy at first, the tannins gripping and present in the mouth but the acidity takes over giving this tension and direction. Quite a linear Petit, a more serious and defined one with a wet stone salinity on the finish alongside liquorice and tobacco. Nice potential. 94 Georgina Hindle, Decanter
