Peter Maude Fine Wines
2024, Domaine Paul Avril, CLOS DES PAPES, Rouge, Double Magnum (3000ml)
$637.10 inc. GST
A blend of 45% Grenache, 45% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and other permitted varieties.
Cropped at a minuscule 16 hl/ha, the promising 2024 Châteauneuf-du-Pape boasts a whopping 45% Mourvèdre within the total blend, this is a lip-smackingly spicy, fleshy and black-fruited Clos des Papes with stunning intensity. Complex and expressive, the full-bodied 2024 is shaped by ripe tannins and packs notable tension alongside measured opulence, maintaining striking overall balance at all times. Without a doubt, the 2024 Clos des Papes is a candidate for the wine of the vintage.
94-96 Nicholas Greinacher - Vinous.
Juicy, fresh, blackberry-tinged, vibrant, precise and fresh. Subtle violet note with raspberry, minerals and great length. Will be quite Burgundian with age, feels like a classic vintage and you don't feel the 14.5% alcohol at all. All destemmed, aged in old foudres, yields of just 17hl/ha. Drink 2031-2055.
98 Matt Walls, Decanter.
Cask sample. Brooding and spicy nose – liquorice and wild-animal notes. The spice is there on the palate, with a sleekness and ripeness. Juicy and with deep intensity. This is ripe, with seductive tannins, and well proportioned. Very attractive and should age very well indeed.
