Pale to mid lemon yellow. Very little at first on the nose, one of the cool Bâtards rather than the heady type. Now the fruit starts to emerge, and it builds very well towards the back of the palate. Various strands of fruit are intertwined, ripe orchard fruit with a little candied lemon and a thread of lime. All leading to a persistent finish. Drink from 2030-2038.

The 2024 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a focused nose and feels intense, more than the preceding 2024 Charlemagne. It offers scents of petrichor, Granny Smiths and just a hint of struck match, all very well defined. The palate is tensile on the entry, quite fresh with a lovely slightly honeyed texture, quite rich considering the growing season but it retains control towards the finish. Maybe it does not deliver the mineralité of the best examples but for me this is a step up from the previous vintage.

Ooh – that’s an absorbing aroma – classy aromas. Larger in scale and beautifully fading – the finish seems lite but it just holds and holds…
