2023, Domaine Y. Clerget, VOLNAY, 1er Cru, 'Santenots'

The 2023 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a fragrant, quite floral bouquet with impressive transparency and detail, as iris and wilted rose petal infuse the red fruit. The palate is quite sweet on the entry and nicely poised, the fruit a little more confit compared to Clerget's other Volnays, with a dab of allspice on the finish. Very fine.

25% new wood, 20% whole bunch vinification to liven up the red clay soil. Glowing ruby purple. Mini reduction but clearly a quality red fruit kicking in behind. Several layers to it, yet has retained full vigour, a pure redcurrant and raspberry fruit with fine length. Drink from 2030-2036.

Here too the nose is just sufficiently reduced to blur the nuances of the floral-suffused aromas. There is better mid-palate density and power, if less finesse and minerality, to the bigger-bodied flavours that possess better overall depth and persistence. Fine quality in an age worthy package. Outstanding.
