2023, Domaine Chandon de Briailles, PERNAND-VERGELESSES, 1er Cru, 'Ile de Vergelesses'

In barrel, blended. A rich purple colour, the nose shows a slightly higher volatile which adds a nutty element to the fruit on the nose, but this has not yet been cleaned up for bottling either. The fruit profile is just on the blacker side of the cusp with red berries. Leaves a lingering fine rich red and black cherry aftertaste. Drink from 2027-2032. **** 90-93 Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy.
The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses Île de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from a parcel purchased by the family's great-grandmother, located on more limestone-heavy soils than the Les Vergelesses. It has a much more mineral bouquet with vivacious red cherry and raspberry fruit. The palate is ripe and generous with kirsch, Morello cherries and very light fig notes toward the finish. Drink it over the next decade. 90-92 Neal Martin.
Did you know that the name of Ile des Vergelesses is actually Ile des Haute Vergelesses - this has a real name of Les Basses Vergelesses - but they don't like that name here! The remains of a Roman village can be found in the mid-section of this vineyard. This is a barrel sample. Still airy but larger and deeper - so perfumed - that's a great nose. A more visible structure and more finishing intensity. More strict - in a good sense - finishing, again a haunting and subtle finishing. You should longer for this than the previous wines - that's why it's still in elevage. Top! Bill Nanson.
