2022, Domaine Samuel Billaud, CHABLIS, 1er Cru, 'Mont de Milieu'

The 2022 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru comes from three parcels and is matured 80% in stainless steel and 20% in barrel. This well-defined bouquet has oyster shell commingling with yellow flowers and a touch of fern. Poised on the entry, the palate is linear and quite strict, but I'm seeking more substance to follow through on the finish. Fine. 89-91 Neal Martin, Vinous (2023).

Produced from Billaud's own grapes, 80% in tank with 20% matured in barrels for a year, before a further year in tank after blending. Very stony soils with old vines and low-yields around 35hl/ha. A denser hue than some. Crisp acidity, lovely texture of apple and a touch of stone fruit with plenty of acidity and pronounced salinity to finish. 94 Andy Howard MW, Decanter (2023).
