Peter Maude Fine Wines

2016, Château Lynch-Moussas, PAUILLAC, 5ème Grand Cru Classée

$110

Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot.

The 2016 Lynch-Moussas feels a little subdued at first, but it melds together, with red and black fruit mixed with sandalwood and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite savoury in style, especially towards the meaty finish. Good length, but it feels a bit advanced for its age. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting. 91 Neal Martin, Vinous (2026).

The 2016 continues a run of great vintages at Lynch-Moussas - they're making some of the their best wines at the moment. Cedar and bilberry sweetness is on display, mouthfilling and juicy, and a little less austere than some. This has really great balance and a sense of generosity - powerful but not overpowering. There's lovely persistency, with drops of minerality, crushed tobacco and a mouthwatering finish. Good yields of 50hl/ha. 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (2018).
