2001, Valduero Gran Reserva, RIBERA DEL DUERO SPAIN 12 Años

$1,460

Full red. Complex, aromatic bouquet of dried cherry, blackcurrant, sandalwood, potpourri and pungent herbs. Sappy, concentrated red and dark berry flavours stain the palate, with notes of allspice, candied rose and cracked pepper contributing lift. Becomes sweeter and more velvety with air and finishes with impressive length. This is drinking extremely well now but has the depth to continue aging. 93/100 Josh Raynolds, Vinous.

Ribera Del Duero, 100% Tempranillo, 4 years in barrel, 8 years in their cellar resting in the bottle.

The 2001 Gran Reserva, from another superb vintage, is still youthful in appearance. Sandalwood, graphite, espresso, roasted herbs, violets, and blackberry aromas lead to a mouth filling, spicy, plush offering that manages to combine elegance and power. Give it another 8-10 years and drink this monumental effort through 2031. 95/100 Jay S Miller, Wine Advocate.

"Deep inky red (quite opaque) with ruby hue on edge. Initially a little reserved, opening Menthol/minty, leather and bramble on the nose, boysenberry and plum, lingering black currant. On the palate, silky, ethereal at first, deep, layered liquorice. Needs more time to fully integrate. After being open for a few hours softened out further. Mouth filling and powerful finish."  PMFW tasting team 25/07/22.

Dark black cherry in colour. Subdued blackcurrant and a waft of warm spices and fresh cut leather. Nicely balanced with a powerful long finish. 4.5 Stars, Jo Charvill (PMFW).
