Peter Maude Fine Wines

2024, Felton Road, Dry Riesling

$52

A vibrant bouquet of spring flowers, talc and orchard fruits introduces this impressive and commanding wine. Ripe apple and pear abound on the palate, complimented by pink grapefruit and mineral notes. For a dry wine, it’s surprisingly luscious: such is the power of the fruit supporting this crisp and vineyard expressive Riesling. Mature vines, careful farming and respectfully guided to the bottle. feltonroad.com

The delicate yet layered 2024 Riesling Dry shows fruit richness and floral tones. It is restrained and not showy, with concentration but not weight. Fine purity and savory notes of white talc meet touches of lees-derived pastry. The long finish offers balanced malic acidity and fine phenolics. This is delightful to drink now but will develop with time. 93 Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous (2025).

The 2024 Dry Riesling is lean and austere, despite a distinct slick of residual sugar through the middle palate and finish. I find this to have salted lime, green apple, mint, lemongrass and acidity that is both fresh but also a little sour, with grapefruit, underripe green apple skin and lemon pith flavours. I find this vintage to be quite bracing, but many will love its conviction. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. 90 Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (2025).

Much more delicate than the Heaphy Old Vine Riesling and still shows ripe citrus as well as a touch of white blossom. Pure, not bone dry. In fact the sweetness shows more on the finish than it does in the Heaphy. Extremely pure and very long. Should age well. 16.5 Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com (2024).
