An admirably subtle application of oak can be found on the pretty, cool and airy nose of elegant red cherry, tea and mineral reduction. There is more volume and mid-palate density to the aggressively mineral-driven flavours that possess excellent depth and persistence on the well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. A classic ESJ of finesse and refinement. Outstanding.

The 2024 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the Les Champeaux: darker fruit, hints of black tea and leather. The palate is medium-bodied with fluid tannins, quite harmonious but the acidity has a citrus element that lends this Gevrey sharpness and tension. Quite penetrating on the finish—in a good way. This is extremely promising and defies the vintage. 2027-2045.

Grandfather says starlings used to finish their autumn feed there, hence the name. There is some depth to the ruby colour, with red fruit on the nose, more delicacy than power this year for sure. Some crunchy red berries at the back, with gentle tannins.
