2023, Domaine Ponsot, CLOS DE LA ROCHE, V.V Grand Cru

3.4 ha and Ponsot is by far the largest holder in Clos de la Roche
If the Chapelle has the most floral-suffused nose in the range, this has the spiciest with its nose of beautifully layered red berry aromas that are nuanced by hints of violet, earth and a smoky nuance. The gorgeously textured and impressively scaled flavours possess both fine volume and underlying tension while delivering outstanding length on the moderately austere, palate coating and balanced finish that is very much built-to-age. This is terrific but be aware that it is a wine that will require a minimum of 10 years of keeping and ultimately, probably closer to 20. Don’t miss!

Quite engaging and mercurial, the 2023 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very impressive bouquet: hints of gingerbread and fig underscore orange rind-laced dark berry fruit and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied and quite persistent in the mouth, with insistent grip and a structured finish. This will require time in bottle but it should turn into an impressive Clos de la Roche.

Imperial purple, vibrant. There is not a lot of nose to begin with as this great wine bides its time. It comes across in multiple layers, berries that taste of perfect ripeness with just one or two darker notes creeping in, though the structure has maintained considerable freshness. Raspberries predominate and they appear in multiple waves. Gloriously balanced, with the right intensity and no feeling of the sunshine nor of being picked too late. The flavours stay in the mouth. Drink from 2035-2045.

Clear dark plum colour. Floral, complex nose, mineral, dried fruit. Broad and rich on the attack. Red fruit and liquorice, finishes fresh, spicy, with well-integrated tannins.
