When Frederic Mugnier's father died in 1980 Frederic was pursuing a career in offshore oil engineering. Five years later he gave it up and returned to manage the domaine full-time to re-establish it. He had also attained his commercial pilots’ licence and flew domestically part-time, along with fitting in a six-month crash course at the lycee viticole which provided him with both the contacts and expertise to take over.
From 1950 the vineyards in Chambolle had been leased to Faiveley and later Bruno Clair, which Frederic took back. And in 2004 he also took backthe Monopole of Clos de la Marechale vineyard which had been leased by Faiveley for 54 years. All the vineyards are now farmed organically andhave become some of the most prized in Burgundy.
In total there are seven cuvees on 13.6 hectares of which the Clos de la Marechale accounts for just over 9.5 hectares. The wines are lightly extracted, only lightly oaked and are bottled without fining or filtration. They have become famous for their quality - very fragrant, harmonious, stylish andgreat persistence on the finish.
The New Zealand agency is available exclusively through Peter Maude Fine Wines.
