Peter Maude Fine Wines

2023, Domaine Samuel Billaud, CHABLIS, 1er Cru, 'Vaillons V.V.'

$146

Planted 1950s/1960s. Slightly yellower in colour. A broad nose not yet showing the detail. Quite a powerful core of fruit, more floral than usual, a useful citrus underlay, with fine persistence. Fine long finish. Drink from 2027-2032.
**** 90-93 Jasper Morris MW.

The 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes, from the Vaillons lieu-dit itself, faces west/southwest, and was matured entirely in stainless steel. But unlike Montmains, it is more demonstrative and generous and soars from the glass with notes of pear, tangerine zest and beeswax mingling with oyster shell. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, charming yet tensile, layered and laden with tangy acidity, concluding with a long, saline finish. As expressive as its youthful aromatics may be, this wine always rewards patience.

Pale straw gold. Lightly floral and spicy nose. Super mineral, taut. Floral taste profile. Long, juicy.
