Bordeaux Blend: Merlot, Cabernet Franc.

A lovely estate situated on the western side of the plateau of Pomerol, Château La Grave dates back to the 19th century, when it was owned by the Trigant de Boisset family. As its name indicates, the terroir of Château La Grave is almost pure gravel, marking the beginning of a mile-long gravelly strip that continues into Saint-Émilion, passing through Château Cheval Blanc before ending at Château Figeac. Acquired by Christian Moueix in 1971, Château La Grave was his first vineyard purchase.

An elegant, delicate, charming wine, the gravelly soils of La Grave offer poise and linearity, while the ripe, red fruit and characteristic silky texture make the wine approachable and enjoyable, even in its youth.

Creamy rose touched blackcurrants on the nose. Succulent and juicy on immediate impact, this has a sombre quality almost straight away, the dark liquorice, graphite and black chocolate lacing the black bramble fruits giving a sense of seriousness to it. It's linear with lots of tension, the flavours driving the wine from start to finish. You can feel the pent up energy here, excellently controlled, all in balance with these wonderful deep nuances giving structure and support. 91 Georgina Hindle, Decanter.

The 2021 La Grave was picked September 24 to October 4. There is a little more mineralité and tension compared to some of the entry-level labels among the Moueix portfolio, and more spiciness with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite thick tannins and good extraction. Quite weighty for the vintage, albeit missing a little precision on the finish. But you get a lot of Pomerol in your glass. 88-90 Neal Martin.
