2023, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, VOSNE-ROMANÉE, 1er Cru, 'En Orveaux'

Lovely 1er cru Vosne that sits high up - above Echezeaux and hard up against the border of Chambolle-Musigny. 1.78 for the total cru and here they have 1.08 ha, the largest holding in Orveaux. North-south planted (across the slope) which helps catch the early morning sun in this later-ripening place. Fine, fragrant, classic hillside Vosne.

Vines next to (above) Echézeaux - this is north-south planted which helps catch the early morning sun in this later-ripening place - 'but still a place that needs a bit more patience vs the lower-lying 1ers.'  Here's a more airy and redder fruit - the oak much more in the background. Large scale, cream-framed flavour, then a late arriving touch of tannin like the last - but again ripe and not drying. Creamy barrel in the finish too but with a clear extra level of complexity - even a hint of salinity at the end - this will be a beauty in 5+ years. Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report.
