Peter Maude Fine Wines
2017, Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot, VOLNAY, 1er Cru, Carelles Sous La Chapelle
The 2017 Volnay Carelle Sous la Chapelle 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of red currant, strawberry and sous-bois, opening nicely with aeration though still one of the more bashful in this lineup. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lithe and harmonious, delivering disarming purity toward the persistent finish. There is verve and class to this Volnay, and it should drink well for 20 years. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. 93 Neal Martin, Vinous (2021).
Similar brisk fresh red purple. The nose is rather more closed than the previous wines, and the tannic structure is rather more present. It is not that the fruit is not there but it has to play second fiddle to the structure at the moment. ** 88 Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (2018).
