2014, Château Certan de May, POMEROL

$198

Bordeaux Blend: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon.

A touch volatile on the first nose here, and we didn't have a second bottle. It does clear after a few minutes, showing raspberry and black cherry fruits with clear appellation typicity, but overall there is a brittle feel, and I would not suggest keeping this wine for long. Possible bottle issue. 88 Jane Anson, Decanter (2020).

The 2014 Certan de May has a dusky, animally nose with scents of dried blood and hung game developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannin, notes of pencil lead infusing the black fruit with just a touch of bitterness on the finish. It feels a little gawky at the moment although I think it might come together. Fingers crossed though I am not optimistic. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 85 Neal Martin, Vinous (2018).

The 2014 Certan de May offers terrific depth and intensity, although it is very much closed in on itself. Dark cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint, liquorice and dried flowers gain volume over time. Deceptively medium in body, the 2014 has plenty of underlying tannin as well as enough acidity to drink well for a number of years. 94+ Antonio Galloni, Vinous (2017).

Tight and closed on the nose but good depth. Hint of vanilla oak. Ripe fruit on the palate then a firm, dry finish. Oak just a little dominant but there’s potential. 89 James Lawther MW, Decanter.

Drinking Window: 2021 - 2030
