Domaine Guffens-Heynen

Maconnaise

Maine and Jean-Marie Guffens-Heynen left Flanders and headed for Burgundy when just students, in 1976. They did not have a background in wine and spoke little French. But they learned quickly with Maine working for local growers and Jean-Marie studying viticulture and learning winemaking. They managed a small estate in the Maconnaise and by 1979 starting purchasing vine parcels in the hills of Pierreclos. Their passion for vines and winemaking grew quickly and today Domaine Guffens-Heynen is well established and sells its wines internationally.

Today the domaine has vineyard holdings that cover 5.3 hectares, on the hills of Pierreclos, Vergisson and Davaye. In 1990 they created Verget, a negociant company that sources grapes from vines in the Maconnais, Chablis and Cote d'Or. The Verget labels are a Chablis grand cru, a Meursault and a Pouilly-Fuisse. In 1997 they purchased Chateau des Tourettes in Vaucluse not far from Apt. Here they produce a variety of wines made from Chardonnay, Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier for the whites and Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Grenache for the reds and roses.

The Guffen-Heynen wine empire farm the vineyards organically and is very focused on grape quality. The Domaine Guffens-Heynen and Verget wines are all hand-harvested while several labels produced are classified Vin des Pays de Vaulcuse and these wines offer great value for their quality. They inlcude the Verget du Sud Chardonnay and the Guffens Marsanne-Rousanne. All the wines are exceptionally well made and display individual terroir character.
