2021, Château Bourgneuf, POMEROL

Owned by the Vayron family since 1821, this lovely vineyard is situated in the heart of Pomerol’s most prestigious terroirs, with Château Trotanoy as its neighbour.

Situated in one of the warmest parts of Pomerol, Château Bourgneuf produces wines that are deep and dense, layered and complex, with perfectly rounded tannins. The wine’s ripe fruit aromas make it seductive when young, but a few years of cellaring are strongly rewarded.

The 2021 Bourgneuf was picked September 27 to October 4. It has an attractive nose with bright black cherry and wild strawberry fruit and fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit laced with tobacco and thyme, building nicely toward a cohesive, sappy finish. The 2021 continues a fine run for this Pomerol estate. 91-93 Neal Martin.

The 2021 Bourgneuf is a very pretty and promising wine. Naturally, the 2021 doesn’t have the richness of recent previous editions, but it largely compensates for that with its energy and focus. Hints of red berry fruit, orange peel, cinnamon and crushed rocks lift the finish in this stylish, mid-weight Pomerol. Bourgneuf has been one of Pomerol's under the radar gems for years. Deep and heady nose, then so light, vibrant and sweet on the palate. Mouthwatering acidity with fruit just shy of being high-toned, the freshLy picked strawberry, raspberry leaf and blackcurrant all bouncy and to the fore, while the silky tannins gently give a frame that slowly expands and widens. Backbone and structure from the fruit, a driving sensation and sense of intent with a hint of wood and spice on the finish, just stopping short of being rustic.
