2021, Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, VOLNAY, 1er Cru, 'Taillepieds'

$274

D'Angerville's parcel of Taillepieds is a generous hectare located at the top of the slope at the same level as the Clos des Ducs. The expressive wild strawberry and pomegranate fruit aromas here are perfumed and aromatic rather than powerful (as the Taillepieds often is). The body is relatively light, and there is a dynamic balance between fresh acidity and the ripeness that is readily apparent here. He ferments on native yeasts in open-top wood fermenters before ageing in mostly used casks. 91 Charles Curtis MW, Decanter.

Supremely elegant nose, with a core of concentrated ripe fruit. Mineral and chalky to finish. A very fine Volnay which will age effortlessly for many years. Domaine d'Angerville's plot of Taillepieds totals 1.07ha, lying on weathered, thin and rocky soils to the south of the village of Volnay. Extra altitude adds to the precision and finesse. 93 Andy Howard MW, Decanter.

The 2021 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru possesses one of the most alluring bouquet from the Domaine this year, a mélange of red and black fruit, cold granite, a touch of brine and a touch of undergrowth. Quite complex compared to other Premier Crus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, tart red cherry intermixed with blackcurrant and touches of thyme and bay, just tapering a little towards the finish. It will fill out by the time of bottling. 91-93 Neal Martin, Vinous.

The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds opens in the glass with aromas of plums, bonfire, sweet soil tones and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's one of the more structured, tensile wines in the range, exhibiting powdery tannins and a mineral finish. 91-93 William Kelley, Wine Advocate.
