Peter Maude Fine Wines

2018, Klein Constantia, Vin de Constance, 500ml

The most gorgeous mix of straw, powerful citrus, apricot, fresh juicy white pear and peach, tons of stone fruits and spice, graphite and smoke. As ever this is both subtle and overpowering, managing push and pull and so so good - both lusciously sweet and a breath of fresh air running through your palate. As I say every time I drink Vin de Constance, if every sweet wine tasted like this, there would be no sales crisis in the category. Drink now, or allow the flavours to deepen further over the next decade. 98/100 Jane Anson, Decanter Magazine.

Vin de Constance is a naturally sweet wine made from the Muscat de Frontignon grape, harvested by hand in numerous passes at different levels of ripeness, balancing all those beautiful sugars and acidities with no botrytis influence whatsoever. For this reason, the wine retains a beautifully crisp, floral and lightly honeyed profile with crystalline fruit and oodles of energy.
Vin de Constance has an amazing history. Established in 1685, it was mentioned by Dickens and Jane Austen in their works and enjoyed by Kings, Queens, Emperors and Prime Ministers in the 1800s before disappearing after the vineyards were destroyed by Phylloxera. In the 1980s it was resurrected and has been a spectacular success.

“A little Constantia … for its healing powers on a disappointed heart” - Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility.
