2018, Domaine Chandon de Briailles, PERNAND-VERGELESSES, 1er Cru, "Ile des Vergelesses"
A mix of vine ages though the oldest date from 1938.
The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from mid-slope, east-facing vines on limestone-clay soils. This offers more clarity and delineation than the Les Vergelesses, with vivid red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite saline and a little spicier than the Vergelesses, with a longer tail on the finish. This is superb. What you might call proper red Burgundy! 91-93 Neal Martin, Vinous.
This is at once fresher and cooler with its airy nose of intensely floral-suffused aromas of red and dark raspberry. There is even better vibrancy to the detailed and stony middle weight flavours that also possess good depth and persistence on the finish that flashes a similar hint of sweetness. Outstanding. 90-92 Burghound
