Peter Maude Fine Wines

2018, Domaine Blain-Gagnard, VOLNAY "Pitures"

The vines are on marl so Jean-Marc Blain avoids punching down which might extract the wrong tannins. Medium red, slight walnut kernel nose, cherry stones too. Brisk fruit with considerable depth, some oak. Rather more backward and one senses Pommard next door. Griottine cherries on the palate though. *** 88-91 Jasper Morris MW

Here the expressive nose is a bit riper with its mix of liqueur-like and spicy red cherry scents. The succulent yet quite serious broad-shouldered flavours flash every muscle on the robust, sappy and impressively long finish. There's plenty of aging potential here too for the patient.
89-92 Burghound.
