It's not often that we have three consecutive vintages of the same fine Burgundy in stock at the same time, but we've always appreciated the character and ageability of this A.-F. Gros Savigny-Les-Beaune, so we buy extra every year where possible (above what we need for En Primeur) to have on hand. This is a lovely wine that can have a touch of earthiness when young - but in warm vintages the fruit really shows through - plus it ages really well. Great wine for the cellar, but as you will see from the notes, all three vintages (especially the 2017) are starting to show very well. You could even taste your way through the different vintages over a period of time.
On the wine growing area Savigny-Les-Beaune:
"On the upper slope, facing due south, but reaching up into the entry to the valley. There is quite a lot of clay in the soil, and the wines tend to be on the firm side. Jadot, Bize and Pavelot are excellent sources, along with Anne-Françoise Gros' Clos des Guettes." Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
A pretty combination of red currant, plum, violet and a whiff of the sauvage gives way to attractively textured and nicely concentrated medium-bodied flavours that exhibit fine length on the firm, youthfully austere and robust, indeed even bold, finish. Good quality here. Top Value 90-92 Burghound
The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Clos des Guettes 1er Cru, matured in around 35% new oak, has a generous bouquet of macerated small red cherries, mulberry and touches of crushed stone. The harmonious, medium-bodied palate features sappy red berry fruit and a gentle grip. 89-91 Neal Martin, Vinous
Jan 2022 PMFW Team tasting 2017 vintage:
Ruby with a rim of violet. Hint of toast, sweet violets and roses on the nose with a little nutmeg, very pretty. Savoury and mineral on the attack, very juicy mid-palate. A bit of grip on the end. Long and lingering finish. Delicious and elegant. Katharine Maude.
Sweet and aromatic, lightly spiced with cinnamon & nutmeg. Well structured and delicious. Jo Charvill 20/05/19
There is once again very good volume to the precise and stonier middle weight flavours that exhibit a taut muscularity on the serious, built-to-age and youthfully austere finale where a hint of warmth gradually emerges. 89-91 Allen Meadows, Burghound.
Mineral-driven and soil-inflected medium weight flavours that conclude in a strikingly intense if youthfully austere finish. This is presently somewhat on the lean side and will need a few years to flesh out.
The nose is redolent of briary dark forest fruits which lead to a lush cassis and blackberry fruit core. Subtle vanilla spice adds warmth and breadth whilst the wine's freshness and coiled structure creates a feeling of excellent balance.
Mr. Wheeler Wine Merchant, UK.
Planted in 1990. There is a violet edge to the crimson, a little bit of reduction. The fruit is attractive, before quite a savoury finish. *** 88-90 Jasper Morris MW
