Domaine Brusset is a family estate created in 1947 by my grandfather André Brusset, and developed further by my father Daniel,' says current incumbent Laurent Brusset, who will soon be working his 30th vintage.
Based in Cote du Rhone's Cairanne region Domaine Brusset owns 70h of vineyards spanning five appellations including Rasteau and Ventoux.
'The vineyards for Les Hauts de Montmirail are on terraces at 380m and facing south,' says Laurent. 'It's the best location in this appellation. The sunshine allows us to achieve perfect maturity in the grapes as well as avoiding the need for any additional treatments of the vines.'
The terraced vines crouch under the Dentelles de Montmirail, a ridge of calcareous rock and clay that dates from the Jurassic period. Once the fruit for this blend (50% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 25% Mourvedre) has been hand-picked and fermented separately, half is aged for a year in partially-new French oak.
