Domaine Paul Avril
This fabulous producer based in Chateauneuf-du-Papes in the Southern Rhone is still owned by the Avril family; Clos de Papes' first vintage was in 1896. Since then the Domaine has passed down through four generations - Régis Avril and then onto the second Paul Avril who took control in 1963 prior to Paul-Vincent who took over in 2009.
Clos des Papes is in-demand world-wide and is produced by the careful blending of grapes from 24 parcels picked from a total of 32 hecatres of vines.The blend is typically 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and 5% other (Counoise, Muscardin and Vaccarese).Annual production is 8,000 cases.
Clos des Papes quality is partly due to its low yields - 17 to 19 hl/ha which is minimized by green harvest and careful grape selection at harvest. Paul-Vincent Avril is contantly striving for more quality for his customers world-wide. Eighty percent of production amounting to 100,000 bottles is exported. The estate also produces a white Rhone (10% production) and a second red, Le Petit Vin d'Avril, made from declassified Chateauneuf du Pape grapes and a 5ha vineyard parcel adjacent to the Rhone river. Due to it being a blend of vintages its classification is a lowly vin de table which makes it one of the best value-for-money wines in all of the Rhone
