Domaine Chandon-de-Brialles

Savigny-Les-Beaune, Beaune, Bourgogne, France

The de Nicolay family have owned this Domaine since 1834. In modern times it has been transformed from a mediocre producer into one of distinction by Claude and her mother Nadine de Nicolay. Claude gained her diploma in oenology and viticulture in Dijon but also did some time in New Zealand and Oregon, and is considered to be a very fine winemaker.

From the mid-eighties the domaine became organic and is now entirely biodynamic. Claude is married to Frederic Drouhin who is the head of the negociant house Joseph Drouhin in Beaune. There are 14 crus including four whites vinified on a total of 13.7 hectares of vines shared equally amongst the three villages of Savigny-les-Beaune, Pernard-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton.

The grapes are all hand-harvested and vinified traditionally. The Grand Cru Cortons are all whole-bunch pressed with lesser stem inclusion for the lighter wines such as the Savignys. Oak influence in the wines is minimal. Claude dislikes the the character imparted by new oak as it interferes with the purity of the wine. As a consequence, some of the barrels in use are 25 years old, and the domaine annually purchases only eight new barrels. The red wines are very fine and noted for their depth and length of palate. As with the whites, they are only fined and filtered if Claude considers it necessary. All the wines individually reflect the respective terroirs of the crus and overall they represent Burgundy of the highest quality.
