Domaine Bruno Clair

Marsannay, Côtes-de-Nuîts, Bourgogne, France

Bruno Clair runs one of the largest Domaines in Burgundy as it covers 23 hectares and includes vineyards that extend from Marsannay to Savigny. It was founded in 1979 but in 1985 the vineyards of his parents and five siblings were added to the mix (Clos-de-Beze, Cazetiers, Clos-St-Jacques, Vosne-Romanée, Clos-du-Fonteny and Chambolle-Musigny) and the company of Domaine Bruno Clair came into being. In 1993 he added vineyards in Corton-Charlemagne, Pernard-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton and three years later Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle to make up the 23 hectares. The highly knowledgable Bruno Clair farms the Estate organically but is not certified. Bruno also dislikes leaf plucking and speaks of the vines being able to breathe - all the grapes are hand picked. The wines are very individual including a Marsannay made from both Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc fermented in both oak and stainless steel and made from grapes planted in 1981 on land reclaimed from scrub. Bottling is done at 13-14 months although the whites are bottled much earlier.

The reds are full and rich and well balanced. The Marsannays have great finesse. There are five Gevry-Chambertin Premier Crus and  the Bonnes Mares and Clos-de-Beze Grand Crus. The white grand cru is a Corton-Charlemagne. The range never disappoints and Bruno is a meticulous winemaker who seeks purity and balance. Domaine Bruno Clair is definitely one of Burgundy's top producers.
