Château Certan Marzelle

Pomerol, Right-bank, Bordeaux

Certan Mazelle is a boutique chateau/vineyard of 100% merlot located in the heart of Pomerol on just 3.2 hectares. It has only a short history having originally been a parcel of vines of the Certan-Giraud vineyard; another section of the vineyard was renamed Hosanna.

The vines are around 30 years old and annual production is 12,000 bottles. The wine is made by the same team that manage Petrus, Hosanna and Trotanoy and ownership of all these and Certan Marzelle rests with the Libourne based firm of J.P. Moueix which is headed by Christian Moueix.

Château Certan Mazelle has similarities to Château Le Pin which is also 100% merlot and slightly smaller in size. Density of vines and hectolitres per hectare are similar although Le Pin produces only 7,000 bottles annually which probably means a more rigorous standard of grape selection prior to fermentation. Both are aged for 18 months in oak but with Certain Marzelle new oak is just 30% compared to Le Pin's 100%.
